About
The English (BA) – Rhetoric and Technical Writing degree program at Appalachian State University is one of the few of its kind in North Carolina, preparing students with communication fundamentals as well as experience with different types of print media, technical and science writing, and writing for the Internet.
Graduates are assured success and flexibility in a wide variety of career options, particularly in business and industry. A required internship tailored to each student’s career goals provides excellent experience for future positions in public policy, social advocacy, public relations, marketing, advertising, public service, and general communications within engineering, science and software firms. Some students choose to go on to law school or graduate school.
Faculty members have strong experience in both academia and industry, and students flourish under their guidance in small classes.

Why Appalachian?
- The skills most in demand for today’s job market are those in which English majors excel – oral and written communication, critical thinking, active listening, reading comprehension and analysis.
- This program has an excellent record of career placement.
- Research shows that English majors who choose to pursue a graduate or professional degree consistently perform at the highest levels on the GMAT, MCAT, LSAT and the GRE.
- Qualifying students can participate in Appalachian’s accelerated master’s program – often called 4+1 – and complete a master’s degree in English in one additional year.
